Just curious if anyone here knows of any barriers to entry for a dog park/bar type business. Portland is notoriously dog-friendly (although we know some folks here have issues finding rentals that will accept their pups) and I know from my various visits that there is not a shortage of bars/breweries that allow well-behaved, leashed pups on premises. But, I don't know of any businesses that are actually built around having an off-leash area for dogs to play and get some exercise while their owners grab a drink or a snack.

Here's an example business that is currently operating in Denver:

Bark Bar - Denver

Does a business like this exist in Portland? If not, is there something going on politically to prevent it? Is the demand not there? Thanks for your input - maybe we can get together and make something like this happen in PDX!

I know there are places like the Lucky Lab that allow dogs, but don't know of anything like this. Which would probably make a good business for someone in Portland.

Yeah. the Lucky Lab was the first place that came to mind for me. They have such an extensive outdoor area (I'm talking about the one in the NW, not sure if there are multiple locations) that it just seems like a no brainer to add a legitimate dog run.

I can only assume that there is a health code or some other political barrier, because a business like this makes too much sense for Portland. I've been thinking about approaching existing businesses like the Lucky Lab or other brewpubs to see if they had an interest in expanding rather than trying to build something like this from scratch on my own.

I don't know the legality aspect but I'd say any city with a vegan strip bar is just asking to have a dog park that serves micro brew!

It is? I crossed Portland off my list because I swear about 80% or more of the apartments I was looking at either said no pets, or no dogs.

^ Yeah that's definitely a severe problem, I'm finding out too. It really makes no sense to me... I'm willing to pay extra money, on a non refundable basis, but I keep getting turned down. It's weird to me. Fine, maybe you have to do extra cleaning at the end of the lease... But wouldn't the extra $2400 you could get out of the pet fees be enough to take care of that? It's disheartening, to say the least.

I even read an article over at the humane society website talking about how inundated the Portland area locations are, due to residents having no choice but to abandon their pets. It's sad. I even saw a post by a Portland area landlord here at city-data tell someone "ditch your dog and I'll rent to you." I guess it shows my naivete but I wouldn't have expected a city like Portland to be so hard to bring my pets to.

And I'm only talking about 2 well-behaved, inside-only older cats and a mini-dachshund!
