I can't seem to find a whole lot of information on this neighborhood, despite it being pretty close-in, on the bus lines, close to the new Max line, with some seemingly cool parks.

Do you live there? Are there any sketchy areas? Would you feel comfortable raising a family there? Anyone have kids at Grout Elementary School? Why would/wouldn't you live there?

Just trying to get a sense of the place.

The area is mixed--houses and a lot of apartments. Varies block by block but it's not unsafe, just sketchy along parts of Powell and SE 39th. There are lots of nice spots and areas. Close to downtown and Woodstock, etc.

Grout is a Title 1 school and has mixed test scores. It's a great little school--test scores are in part lower due to the demographics which include a number of Somali Bantu immigrants (the Bantu's do not have a written language so literacy is affected and many of the kids were malnourished in refugee camps) and Burmese immigrants. But it's a great community and staff. Kids mix well and it's not a school that you should base an opinion on just on test scores--visit and see. I would not have a problem sending my child there.
