Hello everyone,
I'm currently serving in the United States Coast Guard with about a 1 1/2 years left till the end of my enlistment. I have about 8 months left until I finish my B.A. in Project Management. And I also have an A.S. in Mechanical Drafting/Engineering which I earned prior to joining the military years ago.

Anyways, does anyone know of some military friendly employers in the Portland Metro area? I know that Union Pacific is very military friendly, any others? I'll be looking for a position that will utilize my Project Management degree. I know it's still a long ways out, but I figure I'd start doing some research on the subject.

I'd appreciate any help,
Have a great day everyone!!!

Walmart is and they are doing a lot of hiring right now (new stores in Sherwood, Tigard). I doubt if they will put your degree to use though. Good luck in your search. (Note - this is not intended as a pro- or anti-Walmart screed, just passing on the info).

The Coast Guard is highly regarded in Portland so if you can manage to survive the first applicant screen your odds are better than most. Work with your college placement office to find an internship after the end of your enlistment, ideally at the Port of Portland.

In my experience all Portland metro employers are military friendly provided you have the skills they need. Personally I would not apply at UP or BN because I know too much about the inside 'game', they chew up and spit out talent.

What are you doing now in the Coast Guard?

Since you were looking at UP think about: https://www.gbrx.com/Careers.php or Welcome to Precision Castparts Corp. . This is likely too cyclical: Facilities - Vigor Industrial .

Nell Plotts,
Thanks for the potential leads on companies. Glad to hear that prior Coasties are highly regarded. To answer your question, I'm currently an aviation mechanic but want nothing to do with being a mechanic once my enlistment ends.

Thanks again

For all the responsibility aviation mechanics aren't paid enough IMHO.
