I have been trying to find a landscape designer/architect off and on. When I view portfolios they all require a level of maintenance beyond what I am looking for. So far the overall style in Portland I have seen is of the same "type". I have talked to a couple and have received feedback that I essentially don't need one. This may also be the case, but I feel like it is born from frustration of my goals. Most of my searching has been internet based so far. I would go it on my own if I wasn't so clueless on what is actually available for plants, materials, visual aesthetics, etc.

How can I determine if a landscape architect/designer is appropriate and then what other methods are available for finding one that will work well for my requirements?

Keep in mind the fact that the portfolio of a landscape architect (or architect for that matter) is a reflection of the client's needs and desires.

Were I you I would put your requirements in writing and e-mail that to several asking them to contact you. After a discussion, if you both are interested, ask for a site visit. During that visit determine if that professional can meet your needs.
