Houston. You can get an absurd quantity and quality of food here for your dollar and the diversity is great. It's also a metro area that eclipes PDX-metro by about 8.5 times hence why it's not a good comparison.

I tried Voodoo Doughnuts once during my second stay in Portland and was underwhelmed.

They're colorful sugar bombs, and honestly, I've had a better maple bacon donut elsewhere. The most exciting thing about them is the bright pink box with the lascivious slogan.

The downtown donut place I'd be tempted to try but haven't is Blue Star. "Pear plum compote" sounds more intriguing than a donut with tang or fruit loops to me.

Then you should give Pip's Donuts a try, Voodoo is more the local tourist trap, though I do enjoy a couple types of donuts there.

I personally think Portland's food scene is top notch! I actually really enjoy the crazy combos you find at the small restaurants throughout the city.

I am a huge breakfast fan. So far Gravy is my favorite. Their french toast is ridiculous, followed by tin shed and their potatoe cakes and bacon gravy!!
