It all depends on what areas you live in. There are some HOA's even for residential neighborhoods! The price is low, but covers common areas, etc.

Read the Codes, Covenants and Restriction papers...Every condo and most townhome neighborhoods have them. They can be fairly restrictive (especially on outside painting and exterior things). Check especially for the parking options. Some have absolutely no parking unless you're in your own drive way...others have street parking or at least visitor parking available.

Another thing to check is the pet rules and regs. With so many people owning dogs here... it is commonly expected that dogs are to remain on leashes and be cleaned up after whenever they are outside.

Some HOA's have very strict rules about noise levels as well... including animals and people. It just all depends. The good news is that with that type of situation, one can pretty much be assured of living in a quiet place.

Best,

Where are the Asian (Chinese) neighborhoods, if any, in the Portland area? Are they nice areas for families or rundown cheesy "Chinatown" type places?
