Hi, we are planning moving to Portland for business reasons, and aiming for the end of August to coincide with the start of school year. We enjoy the outdoors, biking, walking, running, skiing, as well as cultural experiences a city can bring.

Can anyone advise of areas to live with kids and schools to attend? If possible we would like a Spanish immersion school.

Any advice would be awesome!

Thanks in advance.
Lynda

Language immersion program admission is by lottery. You could check the Portland Public Schools website for current information but I THINK the application process is closed. As a practical matter the student needs to start in Kindergarten unless they have some fluency with the language. If it is really important to you consider looking for a private school language immersion program for a year or two then apply for entry into a public school language immersion program. The reason I mention this is that there is attrition over time and the school will be looking for appropriate students to add to their program. I know the west side of the Willamette River and close in east side. There are no neighborhoods I wouldn't recommend. Basically where you live will be impacted by how much you can afford to pay for housing.

If you want to get into Spanish immersion your best chances lottery wise are on the east side. There's only one Spanish program on the west side and it's hard to get into (harder than east side). They now give priority to area so if you're on the west side you get priority to the ONLY language program for the entire west side. East side has many so the numbers applying are smaller. Lottery closes in February. Big changes coming to the transfer policy next year and boundary changes the following. Lots in flux right now.

My nephew's wife is a Mexican national with degree from a well regarded university in Mexico, a teaching certificate and teaching experience in Mexico. PPS hired her as a TA, then as the school secretary, at Bridger (where they have a Spanish immersion program). The school has a lot of kids with challenges who speak Spanish at home but they are really making an effort to bring the kids along academically. I hear nothing but praises of the principal at family gatherings.

The students at Bridger are probably more 'real' than the students at other schools where the kids want for nothing. The OP probably has a higher chance of getting admitted to Bridger's Spanish immersion program.
