Yup, especially when it comes to food, there is no question the people here are morons. I'm not trying to be mean, but what else do you call it really when people buy into fads for no real reason just because? I think "moronic" would be a good term for that behavior. Perhaps they are smart in other ways, but when it comes to science, they're morons.

There is no benefit to organic food whatsoever when it comes to nutritional value. In fact most of the time organic foods are pathetically small and overpriced. My girlfriend had to do a whole report and study of this for a PSU class and found the same conclusion through numerous research. I have done a ton of my own research and reading about it and there's no good reason to buy organic food. It's just another catchphrase. We live in 2015, the idea of things being genetically modified should be amazing and cool and futuristic not evil and suspicious and bad. Where are these people living?! The past? I mean come on! Science is amazing and if science can help make better foods, by all means, it should be used to do so.

The other example is the whole "gluten free" nonsense. Only 1% of the population has celiac disease, which means the body is gluten intolerant. I feel truly sorry for these people not just because that's a pain in the butt to daily living, but because now you get laughed at by asking for anything gluten free because it's a fair assumption 9 times out of 10 that anyone ordering food like that is another moron. Gluten is GOOD for you if you're the other 99% of people and an essential element in many foods. It has zero potential to be bad for you whatsoever if you're a normal person, so if someone says, "Well Gluten makes my stomach feel funny," sorry, but no it doesn't. You're wrong. Something else maybe made your stomach feel funny, but that's coincidence, because gluten is perfectly safe and has no issues like that at all. It's just a NORMAL part of FOOD. Yet in Portland we have 10% of these fools who think by avoiding gluten they're going to have some amazing health benefits and they're really smarter than you and doing something so progressive. No, you're a moron, stupider than the dumbest hick in the most backwater town in the redest state that you hate lol.

I try to do what I can to counter these people by buying intentionally GMO food, avoiding organic anything, avoiding restaurants that use that in their marketing, avoiding anything gluten free and trying to find the gluten-loaded variety, basically anything I can do to counter these hipster clowns.

Shame you go out of you way to avoid food that tastes better, and often times when organic is "overpriced" it means it is out of season and had to be shipped from a greater distance.

Though the rest of your post is just pointlessly rude, just so you know.

While I don't agree with JonathanLB on the organic thing (better taste, better farming practices, not funneling money to a corporation that has a long history of abusing farmers who don't go along with them), the gluten nonsense is spot on. They're mostly morons who have decided to fake a food allergy because somehow that became trendy.

It's great for people with legitimate gluten intolerance though. Now there are dedicated grocery store aisles for them and their restaurant options have exploded.

That is true, most people who say they have a gluten allergy do not, but it is good for those that do because there is more products available to them now.

You don't see anyone buying GMO seeds and starting a garden, its not because the seeds are more expensive its because plants have been evolving for billions of years and GMOs arnt even food compared to that

The whole gluten-free thing has gotten a little ridiculous. It's gotten to the point where I have relatives who have kids that ask for gluten-free stuff when they're ordering food, even though they don't have celiac disease or really shown any discomfort when they've eaten anything with gluten.

I'm not that concerned about always buying organic vs non-organic vegetables, but on the other hand though the overuse of anti-biotics in chicken and beef is a little worrisome--and probably has already have some consequences in terms of recent super-bugs. There were actually researchers in the 1970s that were calling for banning non-medical uses of penicillin and tetracycline in farm animals and the FDA agreed but the farm lobby pushed back against it and it was never enforced.

So one doesn't have to subscribe to every health food craze, but there are things to think about in terms of what's going into processed and mass-produced food. People can pick their own battles though.

My opinion: throughout the entire country, the population is full of people who put very little thought into whatever they believe. They put very little thought into who they vote for and why. They believe any crank on the internet who tells them darn near anything that doesn't involve any thought or analysis. They believe the promises of politicians. They believe rumors and gossip.

None of that means they are against science. Most of them like science and they like new inventions and they like convenience. Just as long as they don't have to think too deeply about it.

None of that has much to do with Portland or with Oregon. It's the entire country.

Spoken like a true Oregonian. We are totally unique, different and weird. Unless of course it makes us look bad. Then we are just like everyone else.

The "rusty nails" thing is a bit misleading - the nail (or any non-sterile object that can make a deep puncture) is the mechanism for introducing the bacterium into deeper tissue where it starts generating its toxin.
