I went about the process of seeing my hometown be stagnant for a long time then change rather quickly and decided to stay in pace with the game, though I still have feelings about being invaded. Bought a house and will be taking advantage of people willing to pay far too much in rent. It's easier said than done to change at whim, though, especially when you had very little and it isn't going as far as it did not long ago. Don't necessarily expect someone whose parents hail from the most expensive populaces in the country to get it, as I sure don't understand the opposite of my experience and am just trying to work my way up from intergenerational poverty.

Personally, I wasn't necessarily upset that others had more, at least money wise, but there was a desperation to know how to succeed despite meager beginnings and a decade and a half of health issues. Took a lot of work to find a situation where I could let go of that "baggage" as you call it. Nevertheless, there is something a bit disingenuous when people who are agents of change come into someone else's space and get upset that they aren't as adaptable.

I don't mean to offend you but I didn't invade freemkt's space as he(?) is not from Oregon either. Freemkt does seem to have a great deal of baggage which isn't helpful in changing his living situation. My mother is from Oahu and is in her 70's. Please do your research about the Hawaiian Islands before you talk about invasion and growing up with money. My mom was an excellent student and came to the mainland for college. It was hard work, good family values, and a positive attitude. My father was from NYC and again, please educate yourself about the long history of Immigrants in NYC. Life wasn't and isn't easy.

Transplants effectively invade my economic space when rents necessarily skyrocket

We get it, you make very little and have no plans of changing that situation for yourself and think Portland should stay a stagnant depressed city so you can afford to live here for next to nothing.....

It seems like portland got what it asked for. Urban living is now cool everywhere. Portland was kind of on the forefront of that so what's the big deal?

You want to see a city that shuns growth and scares away newcomers? Look 110 miles south at Eugene. It took them five years of negotiations to get a freakin' Whole Foods. They pushed a zillion dollar gorgeous brand new hospital out of town to Springfield. If you want stagnation and sameness go to Eugene. I know. I grew up there!

These newcomers have absolutely wrecked the place! Things were beautiful up until all them busted '49ers from 'Frisco came a-lookin' for work here. Dagnabbit!

[my family moved to the Portland area in 1843 -- the first large wagon train -- but I'm sure the settlers from the much smaller Meek party a couple of years earlier hated how the newcomers changed the place...]

Why don't you guys blame the true culprits, the big corporations and Federal Gov't. Gov't planning has made certain Metropolitan areas UNLIVABLE for small families, and top Portland Metro Employers (ie Intel, Nike, UA etc), are in desperate need for top talent and are spending huge relocation bonuses to get people to come out here.

I am of Californian parentage and grew up in a plurality (possibly majority) Californian part of the state though, so I may be biased.

But California feels natural. Seattle feels natural. Being in Chicago or New York or Boston feels like a different world to me. I feel more at home in Canada than back east, TBH. People are just so brusque and direct. There is no art or subtlety to social interaction--it's akin to hitting you with a blunt hammer, rather than diplomatically saying things without saying them and reading between the lines. Both ways have their merits, no judgment on my part; I'm just used to the latter.
Californians are nothing like east coasters, I live in northern part of Milwaukie and my Californian neighbor wants to start a HOA. He's worried about what people in the neighborhood are doing on their own land. Here in Oregon we always keep to ourselves, now the guy in my neighborhood from pittsburgh is always trying to get me to grill burgers and drink beers... he not worried my old boat is an eyesore, we even have a barrel fire every once and a while... the 2 don't compare... I rather live with a bunch of east coasters than 1 Californian, but nice try... Californian
