Many people have posted that it's really hard to get through the winter because of the near constant grey skies. Is there anywhere nearby that one could go, like on the weekend, to get a break? How cloudy is it on Mount Hood? What about the coast?

It is sunny right now, but winter trips to California or Hawaii is always a good way to escape grey skies.

I know it's sunny right now :-) (at least from weather reports, I'm currently living in DFW). I was wondering if there was anywhere nearby for a daytrip. I don't know how often I'd be able to afford Hawaii, lol.

It's not unusual for the coast to be sunny when the valley is socked in. Just depends on the weather pattern.

A lot of people go to central and eastern Oregon to escape the cloudy weather, and although you get the sun, it's not that warm.

We are far enough north that the sun is not directly overhead, but hangs to the south during the winter.

When I was a kid, we used to go here for a winter break:

A lot of people I know will take a winter vacation in Hawaii, or Las Vegas.

Check the weather before you go, but many Portlanders drive to Bend for the weekend. Golfers go to Crooked River Ranch where the weather is better than in Bend.

There is a nice resort at Warm Springs which is closer to Portland. They have a nice spa and casino.

Bend is where you go if you want shopping and festivals. It's closest to good skiing.

Sisters is where you go for art galleries and to shop for hand made local crafts.

Almost always weather is better any where in Central Oregon than it is in Portland, but check the weather report before you go.

That's helpful! Thank you.

There is an awful lot of negativity about the cloudiness in the winter, and I'm wondering if I'll feel much the same about it as I currently do about the heat in the summer here. July and August are full of days of 100+ degree weather and HIGH humidity. Around the end of September, I would give my right arm for a day with low humidity and a temp below 90, lol. Thankfully, that's what October is for.

Sweating out the heat and humidity while looking forward to October is different than sucking up the gray days with few hours of sun. SAD is real. If you're worried about it now, I fear you may be in for a rough go of it.

Yup! The SAD has gotten to me several Winters now. I took 2500 u of Vit D this past Winter and I felt better but honestly, we had a sunny Winter. I wouldn't put Portland on my short list of places to move to if lack of sun is a concern.

I'm not "worried" per se... I'm trying to be prepared. I've heard of so many people coming to Portland and being shocked at the weather. I just want to have a plan . I'm sure grey and no sun IS very different from heat and humidity because at least there's sun. But you seriously hide inside during those months because the heat is SO OPPRESSIVE. If you haven't experienced it, there's really now way to describe it. I've been depressed during the summer here, not winter.
