Hahaha, exactly.

Some of us were born in Portland, doomed to a miserable, gloomy existence inside of its harsh walls. But if you're not from around here, don't fall into this briar patch! lol, I'm just joking of course you can move too, but definitely not my favorite city.

I usually think that the people who act like they LOVE Portland (not the ones who are happy here, but the ones who say it's the Greatest City on Earth) just haven't been anywhere else. Most of the ones I know who spout off about how great it is literally have never left the state, except maybe to Washington, so they wouldn't know what makes a great city. A lot of them are also very young and make very little money, so the tax burden is no concern to them because they don't make anything to tax. They just spend money at the mall, where there are no sales taxes, so they assume it's a GREAT place to live because from their view of growing up here, being a kid who doesn't pay rent, bills, etc., they never have had to pay sales taxes so it's the greatest state in the U.S. for taxes to them. It's only once you become an adult when you start to realize how badly Portland sucks, especially if you get out more.

If you're able to pull in 80k/year or more, don't mind a steady amount of clouds and rain, don't mind forest fires from time to time, and aren't black--you'll probably find this to be an okay and welcoming place. Otherwise, if you didn't check all of those boxes, you might want to at least visit for a week..saving yourself future regrets.

I can only imagine how disappointing Portland is for someone who grew up here, usually those that move here and talk about how great this city is is just morons lying to themselves that they made a great choice moving here even though they know deep down they screwed up royally and Portland is nothing more than a dump of a city.
