You are absolutely correct, because the Mayor and the City Council are completely unwilling to ban camping and sleeping in public in Portland (and there's no bathroom support while allowing them to do this, they just pee on the sides of buildings). That unwillingness is supposedly under the guise of a ban not being able to withstand a legal challenge in the courts without the city's ability to offer them shelter. That's impossible and has been proven impossible. Portland just keeps doing more and more for the homeless, and they in turn have increased their numbers showing up to get the free stuff. They've spent millions in the past year and the numbers haven't changed a bit. So it's an endless cycle that will never be fixed and the city will continue to spiral out of control, and down the tubes.

Maybe, the mayor is a weak mayoral position, it requires the city council as a whole to basically function as a mayor. Though while you might disagree, we have had past councils that have made amazing strides for the city, and there will be more councils that also make amazing strides for the city......though it probably won't be in the form of the right wing paradise you are hoping for.

That is so true, Portland is just going down the toilet and everyone within ear shot of this thread should move away immediately to any of the many other better cities in this country. Moving companies should soon be busy with those fleeing from the city to get away from such a horrible place.

My thoughts exactly, it depends where you're moving from. From Southern California...the amount of homeless is extreme, traffic and COL is still way better. Gang activity I have not experienced at all. But it's only been several months.

what's your solution??? its funny, the homeless don't really bother people who grew up here. its the people that what to move here from somewhere else that wish we would get rid of the homeless and make Portland perfect for them.

The solution is both tough and really easy. The easy side of it is the homeless are flowing into Portland for a couple of reasons. One is the climate is moderate, so they don't tend to freeze to death. Two is they are welcomed here by the liberal policies that don't take any real action against them legally, and throws money at them. So the easy part of this solution is to stop allowing them to camp or sleep anywhere they choose in public, because that in itself is just compounding the problem and drawing more.

So, while it's easy for you to attack the transplants as wanting to change Portland, it's easy for us to point out your faults and the fact that other places aren't like this because they have common sense laws.

Letting someone mentally ill sleep on the sidewalk in front of your home doesn't make you a good person or a good liberal.

But if you want a real solution, this is what I would do as the Mayor and the Council.

1. Outlaw camping, sleeping and using the city as their bathroom, because they're claiming they have no place to go. Create one that's cheap, easy, and scalable by doing the following.

2. Set Up large military type tents and cots outside the city and have the police deposit the homeless there that haven't voluntarily went. In particular the ones who won't go themselves. Do it on the edge of the city, or completely outside of it to purposely make it an unattractive place to be a long-term resident. Away from liquor stores etc.

3. Have the social services agencies screen these folks to determine who's seriously mentally ill or drug dependent and work towards getting them treatment, committed, or mandatory court ordered treatment if necessary.

4. Force the nonprofits that are feeding them all over the city to feed them and help them at that location only. If they don't, cut their money supply off if they're receiving any.

5. Give the antisocial, occupy types the option to either leave town or put them in jail if they refuse to stop camping out and sleeping on other people's property instead of in the camp.

6. Figure out who's capable of being put in the workforce and help them get a job while they live in the camp and work towards being able to become self-reliant. Give some people jobs within the camp.

7. Keep some law enforcement onsite at all times.

8. Prioritize putting the most vulnerable in existing shelter space.

I would also dispute your point that only the transplants are offended by the homeless. If you read the articles I posted, you will clearly see the Portland Business Alliance is fed up with it as well.

So basically we should make being homeless illegal, anyone who is homeless is now a criminal that will be rounded up and taken to concentration camps outside of the city......not sure this is the best solution with dealing with the homelessness in Portland....
