"A couple who moved from Austin, Texas, to Portland to be closer to their first grandchild are suing their former landlord -- claiming that their $3,000-a-month rental was plagued by ants, mice and mold."

"Christine and Michael Moser were promised a "high-end home" when they rented the Northeast Portland Tudor sight unseen in the city's hot rental market, according to the $14,382 lawsuit filed last week in Multnomah County Circuit Court."

There are some unethical prop. mgmt companies in the market. Not sure why this particular incident needs its own thread, however.

edit - also, mice and moreso ants aren't exactly shocking. Though I will say this is by far the worst market I've ever lived in for unethical behavior from prop mgmt companies.

It's never a good idea to agree to rent a place before visiting in person. I would never do that ever no matter how "hot" the rental market is. You need to do a thorough walk through before you sign the papers. Especially with the varying quality of rental housing in this area.

…...exactly what I was thinking and not even sure why it deserved an Oregonian article, other that it is click bait to attract the ”outraged” crowd.

A one sided article about what a lawsuit states – undoubtedly exaggerated – with nothing other than cursory followup reporting by the Oregonian.

They apparently contacted the management company (how isn't stated) and the property owner and got no response. And apparently then the investigative reporting ceased and the article was published.

I think some of the complaints are valid and others are just the people from Texas have no idea about the ants and mold and mildew in a garage. The house should have been cleaned including the mice droppings before they moved in though.

IMHE(xperience), in this part of the country, unless the house is brand spanking new, chances are you are going to have to deal with ants and mice.

Unless you live in Portland of course, then you will have to deal with big ole rats, too.

Texan: I know all about ants, we have fire ants. Your ants are tiny.

Portlander: Mm Hmm and just nods knowingly.

$3000 a month for a house in the Irvington neighborhood, I assume, sounds about right. It also sounds like a deadbeat landlord that they shouldn't have rented from to begin with.

Basically this is just a reminder to see a place in person before you rent.

Yeah, that's just common sense. Who moves to a city to pay $3000 a month for a house you've never actually set foot it?

Spending that much on rent I'd guess they couldn't afford the plane tix.
