This has been the big debate on my mind lately. I live in a suburb of Salt Lake City and I own two homes here.

In the past 12 months, I have made 7 trips to Portland in my old 1990 Ford E350 van. Fuel cost is $400 to $500 each trip. I have put over 10,000 miles on that van just making trips from SLC to Portland and back. I know Interstate 15 and 84 from SLC to Portland like the back of my hand. I will be making another trip by December.

I recently turned down a good job offer in Portland, because I don't want to live in my van. I don't mind one weekend, but I think it would get old fast. Plus, I have no place to do laundry. I also have several other RV's that I like to work on, and in Portland I have no where to keep them. My primary residence in Utah has a 2,100 square foot garage.

It seems like the most affordable place to get a larger property within an hour of Portland is the Longview/Kelso area. But what a nightmare, I would have to be to work in Portland at 8 AM, which means I'd have to get up at like 6 AM to get to work on time.

There's never an easy answer.

Well there is also other small towns in Oregon like Scappoose on Hwy 30 that is about 30-45 minutes from downtown Portland.

But then again, this thread is throwing up a lot of red flags for me, so who knows.

It sounds like the job in Portland doesn't pay enough to live on.

You create your own problems. If you own two homes in UT than sell one and keep the other as a rental property.

You sound single, why can't you rent an apt in Portland for the time being. And have you never heard of a laundromat? Actually you would have a washer/dryers in the apt building you rent.

And why do you need a " larger property"? You sound single.

Because it sounds made up.

Why is someone who owns two homes driving a 25 year old car?

Why can't they sell one of the homes? And rent out the other?

Why does a single person need a large property?

A salary of $62K a year for a single person in Portland is considered upper middle class, so why the need to live in a van?

And they said they TURNED DOWN a good job offer, so why even ask about places to live now? Why would it matter?

Makes no sense at all, so someone who is bored making up stories.

My best friend owns two homes and drives a 25 year old car. It likes it, it runs well, he knows it inside and out so he can maintain and do most of the repairs on it himself and obviously, it's long since been paid off.

That as may be, you have to admit Seain has a point though, no? It doesn't sound like the o.p.'s van is the very best vehicle for his purposes. Something better on gas, like a bicycle perhaps, sounds more like it IMO.
