Our 1st choice was for a transfer was Seattle (I can find full time work there), followed by Atlanta, but those destinations were a no go because the branch offices were closing. While we are still working out the details of the transfer, we were looking at Austin, but I really didn't want to live in another early 20 something trendy city, so it is likely going to be DFW area. In hindsight, if you have the opportunity to relocate to Portland with a major career advancement, then by all means seriously consider it. Just make sure you keep your job and you should be fine. Also like others have discussed here and reddit, the housing is in short supply and no longer what I consider a deal. The train has left the station on that one.

I think compared to California, folks think PDX COL is low. However, once here, and without significant pay, it is NOT as low a cost of living as many who do not yet live here believe.
