My husband is going to be starting at the PDX control tower in a few weeks. We're trying to figure out if it would be best to live on the Washington side (and where) or the Oregon side (and where). Any opinions? We're a very open, down to earth Christian family with two kids and a golden retriever. Yes, the typical american family. LOL!!!!! We need a good school district as we have a son with Aspergers and will need a good special education program for him. Thanks for any help you can give.

You should check out the east part of Vancouver so you can be in the Evergreen School District where they have great programs for Asperger's. Also check out Portland Aspergers Network, Portland, Oregon, Resources for Families, Children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS), a form of high-functioning autism (HFA) Camas school district is also supposed to have some good programs as well (Camas WA).

Be aware that if you work in OR and live in WA, you have to pay OR income tax. Our office out there has a number of people who work near the airport and live in Vancouver but they really complain about the taxes. They also usually start work by 6-630 and go home by 330 to avoid the worst of the traffic if they can.

Good luck. Your H should ask people where he's going to work.

I don't think he'll have the option of asking people where he's going to work since he won't meet them until he gets there. I've heard the schools in SE Vancouver are really a lot better than Oregon schools. I'm weighing whether it's best to sacrifice the taxes for the schools or save the taxes and hope the schools are okay with my Aspie son.

The traffic between PDX and the east side of Vancouver (via I-205) is not that bad at all. I-5 from Portland to Vancouver is definitely some of Portland's worse traffic, but if you stay on the east side of Vancouver, (which is where the Evergreen School District is), the commute won't be bad.

There are a lot of airlines pilots and employees who live in Vancouver, around the Camas, Fisher's Landing and Steamboat Landing areas.

With the AS son, I think you'll find programs in Evergreen worth the taxes, or at least from what I've heard.

Well, here's what I've gathered so far. I'm going to have to pay OR state taxes whether I live in WA or OR. So sounds like the schools are better in WA and I've noticed houses are a tad cheaper too. Sounds to me like WA is a better choice. What are housing taxes like in WA? Anyone know?
