I'm looking for small towns outside of Portland to find reasonable rents. I have family in Beaverton but rents are too high. I'm retired so I don't need to commute but would like to be within 20 miles of Beaverton. I sold my condo and would be moving in October. I can be 20-30 miles in any direction including the WA side. Just looking for suggestions. I'm a single person looking for 1 or 2 bedroom for around $1000. Thanks

This gets asked very frequently. Look at Forest Grove, Newburg, McMinnville or Scapoose

Thank you so much. Would you know if there is a way in any of the rental search sites to enter an area vs. a specific town? For example to put a search area that would be up to 30 miles outside of Portland? It would be a timesaver. Thanks

Use https://www.padmapper.com/. It has a mapping function.

You will need to drive....

Banks, Vernonia, StHelens, Carlton, Dayton

For least expensive and less transient community, Stay away from those college towns mentioned above. And off the main highways / commute trails

Get a place on high ground, and with lots of south facing windows.

If possible rent a guest house / apartment above garage from a senior couple who travels a lot.

Many of my neighbors have beautiful rural homes with guest houses, about 3/4 of us have tenants / boarders who enjoy gardening, outdoors, view, quiet and privacy for well under $1000/ month. It is nice to have someone watch the joint and feed the dogs and plants while we travel. My SIL has been 'house sitting' in Maui for 37 yrs , no apartment required. There are many house sitting gigs in PNW during the long wet winters. Several sites list opportunities, most you need to join (free) for security.

Thanks. As a single senior ultimately I would love to find a guest house or a house share (ala Golden Girls). I am so over apartment living- I've been a home owner all my life. I'm moving closer to family so I'm looking for a rental upfront until I figure out what I want to do longterm. I do have 2 old house cats. I'd love to find a longterm house sitting gig or anyone with a add-on apartment. I love being in a house with a yard but not ready to buy.If you can give me leads as to how to search for those ops- I'm all ears. I've searched For rent by Owner and not finding anything.
Thanks for any info.

Live to the south or east of Beaverton. Don't look in Washington. The traffic is a pain.

Thanks- I'll take it under advisement. I've been to PDX many times and find traffic is horrible regardless of where you are. Ideally I'd like to be away from all congestion- hate traffic. I'd love to be in a small town but still be close enough to see family without a long drive.
Right now I'm shooting in the dark- looking at all the various rental sites. Prices are all over the place. So it's a challenge.
