There is a scam going on where houses for sale are posted as houses for rent by con artists that are hoping to get your wired or sent money to their accounts.

You can check it on ownaportlandhome.com

What's your safety net in knowing that who you are dealing with is who they say they are?

If they are the owners I suppose you could check with the assessor but what if they are the "manager" and will not divulge that kind of info.?

Any input?

By the way, personally I have not had that experience, thank god, but am in the market possibly looking to rent.

I can't imagine sending money to someone I don't know, in a place I am not IN to check things out. I wouldn't trust much that I see on Craigslist after all I have heard about the cons on there.

Check out Judge Judy, she has alot of lawsuits that mention con jobs on Craigslist.

Golly!

A scam!

On Craig's List!

Who would have imagined!!

Actually, this was on the local TV news stations about 6 weeks ago.

Craig's List is a cespool for scams. One has to be very careful about using it at all.

I think it was thoughtful of Geometry to give a heads up....Its nice to see people looking out for each other..many people do get taken in by scam artists (especially those who are elderly or foreign) that other people see right through...
Thank you Geometry...

And I do agree with you. It was a good reminder.

Most of the homes I've seen for rent on craigslist are still managed by professional management companies. You should be able to check up on these companies and tell right away if they are legit. For example, do they have a website that has been up for a while, do they have an actual office, phone number listed in the phone book, you can check with the BBB or any licensing agencies, etc.

Renting a house without actually seeing it and meeting the owner or rep from the management company is probably a bad idea all around, even if its not a scam.

Since I am currently looking I will definitely be more cautious, thanks.

I actually came across one of those scams when I was searching for a rental house recently. The first correspondence with this person made it painfully obvious that they were anything but legitimate. It's unfortunate, however, that some people are actually taken by such sleaze balls.

Thanks for the heads up, Geometry. That was nice of you.
