Hello everyone,

My mom and I have been on a wild journey, we've traveled to various states and one right after the next hasn't worked out. We are currently in Texas. But we don't like the fact that there's tornadoes here, and we are not big on heat. We are originally from the PNW (me Oregon & my mom Washington state). We lived in Salem from 2005-2014, then moved to Arizona (which was a terrible choice).

We want to go back but I'm worried about the cost of living because we are currently homeless, and I just want to live somewhere where we can get a home!! By the way I'm working, and my mom has SSD/SSI. But I'm worried the truck we have won't make it. I'm just looking for some advice, much appreciated.

We want to go to Vancouver, WA but I'm wondering if like Eugene or Corvallis is cheaper?

Corvallis has some of the highest property values and rents outside of the Portland Metro, with the possible exception of Ashland. Eugene is likely not much cheaper. You might want to check nearby Albany or Lebanon for less expensive housing, but I'm afraid that EVERYTHING has increased in the last few years. Good luck.

You won't be able to buy a house unless that job you are working pays a really high wage. SSD/SSI isn't enough to pay for anything, not even to rent an apartment. Real estate in all of Oregon and most of Washington is really high, it makes the short list for "highest prices in the country"

If the truck you have won't make the drive, you have a couple of options: you can get the truck repaired so it runs well. You can sell the truck and buy a newer better one, you can rent a truck to do the move with.

If you get away from the big towns in Texas, you are probably already in the place with the lowest rents.

You picked a tough place to come home to. Vancouver suburbs are probably your best bet, but thoroughly investigate the availability of senior and subsidized housing in all the areas. Can you and/or your mom get prequalified and on a waiting list somewhere?
