This year was the 101st annual Portland Rose Parade and I think it's worth sharing that attendence was down, down, down. At the Memorial Colliseum, only about 50% of the seats were sold.
Streets were filled a few years ago but not this year.
It is the sign of the real economy in Portland and surrounding areas? Just wondering.

Not really. I've never understood why anyone would buy a seat in the Coliseum. Parades are meant to be viewed from curbside. It's free otherwise ... the economy shouldn't affect that.

Attendance was down, probably, for a few reasons I can think of:

The weather was bad; much colder than usual.
The issue of not being able to tape off a "spot" seems to have irked a bunch of people.
The cost of gas probably stopped out-of-towners from driving in.

Well, the Rose Parade happens the first Saturday in June. It's much like the Pasadena one, which is larger. The floats are all-floral in both. There are lots of other events, a kids parade, a "fun" parade, runs, a carnival, a rose show. Their website says over 60 events are 'sanctioned' and gathered up under the "Rose Festival" title.

Biggest problem with it all, for me as an "old-timer" is all the commercialism inherint with anything like that these days. Everything's sponsored. Kind of like sports arenas.

Default Personal choice

Reasons to be in the colliseum are: that is where the coronation takes place, there is a very comfortable seat, the weather is better, the parade begins and everyone is energetic, you can hear the announcer talk about parade details.
There do not have to be any hard and fast rules about what and how anyone should experience anything.
This parade is about 1/3 the size of the one in Pasadena and was smaller this year, than in previous years. Pasadena has tremendous international floats and bands and if you can't get there is person, the HD television version is tremendous.
But, the Rosarians are quaint and traditional and hey, the Grand Ronde Indian Casino was allowed a float entry. I don't know if I am more offended by that or the corporate sponsorship.
