I will be out in Portland for an Interview. If I get the job I will be relocating to the Portland area. I am looking for an area with under 1 hr mass transit time to the center of Portland. I am looking for quiet safe areas with houses in the 300K to 400K range with a nice amount of land (1/2 acre plus) as much green as possible and in a dog friendly neighborhood. I have about a day and a half to look around. Any and all suggestions for places to look at welcome.
Thanks much.

The West Linn or Tualatin area would probably be my first choice. But a lot would depend on where the job was.

That would make it an even better choice! Maybe Lake Oswego, too. Though I'm not sure you'll get as large a property there.

I heard about a 'Green Line' running south from the City Center but it isn't finished yet. Are there viable mass transit options from L.O.? Busses don't count . If no MAX from south of the city it's Beaverton or Hillsboro for the o.p.

Your price and lot size requirements most likely will require you to drive to a park and ride for the Max (www.tri-met.org). From the west or east side about 40 minutes to city center on Max. Did a quick search and west has 35 homes east side 10 or many more with longer drive to park and ride.

1/2 acre is a HUGE lot here. You'd probably have to pay that much just for empty land inside the city limits, if there's even undeveloped land left. You could probably find something further out, but as other posters mentioned, you'd need to drive to work, or at least to a park and ride.

Do you have a recommendation for where to do the search, any local real estate sites or specific thoughts on which towns to search?

Thanks much.

First print out a TriMet Max map then try the interactive map at the website of John L. Scott.

Your requirement of a home site of 1/2 acre for decent home in the range of $300-$400 near the Max will be tough. I suggest you rent for a year (home values aren't likely to increase) until you scope out the neighborhoods.

Max or Streetcar service to Lake Oswego is a couple years away.
