Hey!

Me and my good lady are coming to Portland on holiday in September from Bonnie Scotland.

What are the smoking laws in Portland. Can I light up in a bar? and what's with the "can't pump your own gas" stuff. Is that for real? I can't recall ever not pumping my own gas, so what's the deal in Portland.

How much is gas in Portland right now?

Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer my Q's

Thanks, I'm wiser now on the pumping gas question. I'm really looking forward to it. It is rare to have such a service culture in the West. Once in Bangkok, I asked a young trainee hotel manager if there was a shop close by that sold beer. He escorted me all the way to the shop and insisted in carrying my beer back to the hotel ! He got a tip for that. There might have been a local law concerning the carrying of beer !!

Welcome to Portland. If you need info on restaurants in Portland, well, I'm a self-professed foodie and can steer you right!

As for smoking, in January, all Oregon businesses will be non-smoking except for Indian casinos. Right now you can smoke in most bars, although many are already switching over.

Finally, everything (minus tribal casinos) will be smoke-free. Businesses will discover that this won't hinder business and it might even help in the long run. Check out these articles on the effects of Washington's complete smoking ban (minus tribal casinos, again) which started in 2005 after a statewide vote:

Some bars will let you smoke but a lot a switching over to non-smoking, this is actually impacting the bar business in Portland. Some bars are actually not chrging covers now or not as much. The problem is not as your neighbors over there in England where bars were closing down daily due to there county wide smoking ban. The only Portland bars I have been to are in the 2nd Ave. area and a bunch of them let you smoke.

So much for freedom of choice, though. (And for the record, I don't smoke. Never have.)

But then, this is the same state that won't give you the choice to pump your own gas, either, so I guess it's not that big of a surprise ...

A couple years ago I worked with a man who'd moved to Portland from New York (where NO one pumps gas for you). Even though he'd lived in Oregon for several years by that time, he'd still jump out and start pumping his own gas every time he pulled into a station. It drove the station attendants NUTS (I don't know if there's any legal ramification to pumping your own?), but it drove him MORE nuts that he couldn't do it himself.

Having spent most of my driving years elsewhere, it also drives me a bit nuts that I can't pump my own. But I abide .....

I made the heinous sin of finishing off the nozzle when the attendant was busy with about, oh, six HUNDRED other cars. He freaked. He told me he'd have to take down my license number and report me to the manager. When I talked to the manager, she shrugged and threw the piece of paper away.
