I can assure you that is not the case . Unless you are an unlucky city once out of every 40-50 years, it is nothing more than a few blown down trees, maybe a cracked window, and a day or three without power. But yes, hurricanes do suck and other areas of the nation are lucky to be able to avoid them each year.

I feel no need to touch the rest of the post as it is blown way out of proportion, but let's talk about "summer". It lasts from the beginning of May through the end of September, correct. And it sucks, correct. But to say you cannot go outside is hyperbole. It's not that big of a deal. Now if you are from a cold region, maybe it is. However, for those who are used to it - it's nothing.

Funny enough though, we actually get more rain than Portland ... just in huge spurts instead of consistent drizzle.

I'm sure Portland is much more beautiful than Mobile, but Mobile is beautiful in its own right. Sorry you feel differently, but most of your rant is either misguided or an extreme hyperbole.
Actually it is that big of a deal when you didn't grow up in the south. In addition to the culture shock the humidity is BRUTAL.

Have lived all over the country(NE, Southwest, Southern CA, and the PNW) I have NEVER felt more physically uncomfortable than in Florida in the summer.

... which is why I said something to the effect of if you are from the south or a similarly hot/humid region - then it's not a big deal.

Chicago winters are a big deal to me. I have never felt more physically uncomfortable. But I'm sure to natives of the region, they are not as big of a deal. And if I were to say that it is impossible to go outside during the winter, I would not blame them if they thought I was over-exagerrating a bit.

I grew up in Chicago. I didn't mind the cold winters but hated the hot humid summers. My sister loved the summers and never got used to the cold winters. She has been living in LA for ten years and absolutely loves the weather.

When she goes back to Chicago in December to visit her son and his family the cold weather is a shock to her system. She never got used to
Chicago winters and I never got used to Chicago summers.

There are just so many variations of reactions to the weather.
