My wife and I have been planning a move to Portland but have found problems with the inevitable issues regarding an out of state move and landlords who are leery of such relocation attempts.

Is it possible to commute from Vancouver, WA to Portland by Metro? We don't have a car and prefer public transportation through the winter and bikes for the warmer months. I've lived in Atlanta and Houston without a car, so I can't imagine that this would be that difficult but I don't know. Any help?

Yes it is possible and that is actually what the local governments would prefer people do instead of drive.
The bus system from Vancouver WA C-Tran will drop you off in DT Portland.

My wife and I did this 10 years ago when we lived there...

As far as the bicycle idea, maybe not as it is most likely close to a 10 mile trek each way depending on where you choose to live in Vancouver.

The other thing to keep and eye on is the proposed revamp of the I-5 bridge at the Columbia River, assuming they ever decide what they are going to do and actually start work. That will mess up the Vancouver-Portland commute for years.

On the other hand, the committee is having so much trouble deciding what to do it may never happen at all....
