One reality about the OR tax system... no income, no income taxes - and no sales tax.

That's my motto, but the IRS didn't fall for it!

True story, Nell, no sales tax...can't last forever, though. Doesn't Oregon make up for that by taxing retirement (that I know they do) AND Social Security income?

Yes to both your questions. That's one reason I owe so much. I am not retired but when I was out of work a few years ago I took out a pension from a former employer that paid me a whopping $477 a month. The people who administer the plan won't take out for Oregon taxes so I have to pay them at the end of the year. For the past couple of years I have been able to offset that by contributing to my IRA. It reduced my Oregon tax a bit. This year I didn't want to contribute because my IRA lost so much money. I didn't have that protection and so had to pay the full tax of $480.00.

Retired friends on SS tell me they pay state taxes on it.
