Having been away from Portland for a year or two now, I've been thinking about how many things I didn't appreciate when I lived there, including but not limited to...
-cheap/free public transportation
-green vegetation all year round
-good and cheap japanese and mexican food
-backyards and front porches
-gooood coffee and casual coffee shops in general
-farmer's market and cheap local food
-vegetarian restaurants.... and BBQ restaurants (live overseas now)
-tart frozen yogurt
-jogging trails
-crazy citywide events like the santa rampage, urban iditarod, last thursday
-Powells and generally, used bookstores (they just don't exist here)
-seeing the dragon boats and crew practices on the river in the morning
-day trips to the beach
-day trips to the mountain
-day trips to Seattle
-hiking
-finding out you have a mutual friend with pretty much anyone you meet
-nightlife which centers around hanging out, cheap drinks, having fun- not around dressing in designer clothes to go to clubs
-summers
-free or cheap, good live music
-relaxed attitude-where I live now, no one would go to the city square to just get coffee, walk around and hang out

Sorry to fawn, just feeling homesick. Hey, maybe it helps someone who's thinking about moving. Feel free to expand on the list!

I lived there too once, and I know what U mean. I miss it too. In fact, I am thinking about going back in the next year or so.

I moved south and east to a much sunnier part of the state, but I take the train back up about every 2 months and enjoy the downtown.

I kinda feel like the OP for some reason altho I come from MA but live in FL, but also been to Portland. I find P-Town easily has a great selection of food and bars, but as far as neighborhoods go, their not established like the east coast as far as ethnicities go but some of the home styles are very nice.
I also need to ask the OP where he/she is from. Hey where you come from izziya?
