I would agree, more passive than the rowdy folks in Texas at least! Wonder if the gray weather has a role??

Portlanders definitely more laid back, more patient. I think it's mainly to do with the fact that there is no rat-race feeling here. There's not this, "Oh my god, I'll be eaten alive if I don't get in there first" mentality. Which I'm grateful for.

I think "Passive -Aggressive" is the term.
We'll be polite, friendly, helpful, let you go first if you're in a hurry, etc...

And if you do something that annoys, irratates, or ticks us off--we'll let you slide. Once.
While we mumble, complain, and talk you know what about you behind your back.

Do it again...Then, we'll return the favor, but in an underhanded sneaky way.

A good example..be rude or nasty to a server in an eatery here, and they will still be polite and smiling and friendly, but will do everything they can to make your visit the most unpleasant visit you have ever had.

You'll leave loving the server and hating the service. We got you back- returned the favor -but were pleasant about it while hating you.

Get it? That's typical Portland, Oregon behavior right there.

If there are more than 2 drivers at a four way stop, it often turns into a yielding contest!
This always pisses me off...it throws you off because *you know* it's their turn, but they stammer around and state at you for about a month, or stand still in a passive agressive manner until you go, or else. my short daily commute is littered with 4-ways and this always kills me. Many people are just lousy drivers I guess.

I always yield when the situation is interpretive...if I don't usually some jerk tries to go through me to his/her destination.

This also irritates me to no end. What really bugs me are the people that wave you through when it's their turn to go.
How hard is it to understand the concept of right of way?
I drive an F250 and I can see more of whats going around me than somebody in a little car.
A couple of times I have been waved through a stop but refused to move because I saw a potentially dangerous situation that the "waver" didn't.
Every time this happened the "waver" became very irate that I refused to follow their direction.

I haven't figured out if it's hesitation, politeness, or the desire to control the situation. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's a control issue.
Try pretending you don't see the "waver" and watch what happens.
Nine times out of ten they instantly go from polite "waver" to ticked off and screaming at you because you did not do what they wanted you to do....

Go figure........

Passive-aggressive? H'mm. Like it seems Portlanders don't know how to stand in a straight line. They sort of drift to the side then sort of drift in front of you. Most people let them get away with it. But if someone does say something to them they don't get angry or argue, instead they just sort of drift back to their place in line.
