My family (4 kids...ages 7,5,3,1) is relocating to the Portland area. We are considering several towns in both WA & OR and was curious to get your feedback. We need excellent schools with a nice safe community. So far we've heard that Camas, Salmon Creek & Ridgefield are solid options in WA & Lake Oswego, Tigard, Tualatin, & Beaverton are good choices in OR.

Aside from the taxes which we'll consider...where would you choose to live with young elementary school children? My wife is a former school teacher so good schools are required. Lake Oswego seems great...but $$$. All WA schools seems solid...but word of a paper mill near Camas with undesirable smells was reported. I travel a lot so all I need is a commute to the PDX airport...30 minutes is ideal but 45min-1 hour is fine. My wife and kids will camp out in whichever suburb is chosen. We have lived in Jersey, New York, & Vermont. We now live in Kansas. It was always cloudy in VT so the weather doesn't scare us...(we have tornados here...rain is ok )...in fact we're thrilled to be moving back to a bigger city with mountains nearby. My wife and I were ski instructors in college...can't wait to go to Mt. Hood

Thanks for your suggestions! We look forward to visiting your great city soon!

I'm in a similar boat (my husband will also travel a bit). We're relocating from the midwest once school is out and we're really considering Sherwood. We have 3 kids, aged 5, 4 and 2. I'm also a former educator and the schools there are pretty good with better funding than other areas. They just passed a $98 million bond in November. About 70% of the population there is married and about 18% SAHM, which I currently am. It's about 15 miles from downtown so pretty close proximity. The home prices there are pretty good when compared to Lake Oswego, West Linn and Wilsonville...We're thinking somewhere between $275K and $325K.
Hope that helps!

It's about 15 miles southwest of downtown Portland. Type in Sherwood, OR on the www.city-data.com site and it'll give you some great information. Seems like an ideal place to raise a family!

Sherwood would be your best option with the criteria you mentioned IMO. Great schools, family friendly atmosphere, more affordable housing, low crime, and still pretty close to everything. We are buying a home there this fall/winter. We can't wait! Good luck to you.

No offense to everyone who is boasting about Sherwood...but it's out in the middle of nowhere. I've lived in upstate NY, Kansas also..in addition to many other places around the country and overseas... and the best public highschool in Oregon- if you look at test scores, teacher performance, the colleges these kids get into, extracurriculars, etc - is Lincoln HS, at SW 16th and Salmon downtown. It's in the PIL (Portland Interscholastic League), and consisitently named the top public highschool in the state. Although your kids are younger, the elementary and middle schools which feed into Lincoln are equally reputable (and have to be to produce the atmosphere Lincoln has). The school draws from the wealthiest section of Portland, the westside portion of Multnomah county (realllllly high taxes), but areas of Washington County (much lower taxes) in NW Portland- Forest Heights area, feed into it also. The great elementary schools in that district are Bridlemile and Ainsworth.

Seriously, do yourself and your family a favor and stay out of Sherwood or any similar suburbs (Aloha..yuck, Hillsboro, Beaverton) if you want kids who are cultured, politically aware, and independant. This comment may make all the suburbanites scream, but it's true. The suburbs are incredibly shut-off from what makes Portland so special- the culture and "vibe", if you will. The parts of Portland that I referred to are also the safest, stemming again from the fact that they're on average the wealthiest. Good luck!
