Hi there,

I too am considering Portland as a place to move. I've read on this board a lot about the weather and the beautiful landscapes, when you can see them through the rain, and that it's liberal and not that diverse.

But, I haven't heard much about the cultural aspects, the art scene, the music scene, or theater. Does Portland have much to offer in this regard?

Also, I'm coming from Boston, which I'm very over. How, if at all, does it compare for those who have experienced both?

Thanks!

First, the nightlife - yes. Check the art, music and theater listings in local media websites:

Portland Mercury

I lived in the Boston area for three years (1988-91) and arrived in Portland in 1994. The weather is better here, and even the oldest ethnic neighborhoods in Portland are nowhere near as insular as the old ethnic neighborhoods in Boston. The bad parts of town aren't as bad either. Also, the growth of all the towns around Boston means that it takes a long time to get from the city to some real countryside. Here, the countryside is very close to the city.
