You see so many people in there saying the same thing "Well, I don't have a job...I'm going to move there anyways". It makes me wonder, is it really worth it to blow years worth of savings to move during a bad cycle of the economy? Wouldn't it make sense to hunker down and ride it out, and get a job before moving out later?

Hmm. Well, I'm coming out for law school at L & C at the end of August (evening program) and will probably be doing the same thing if I don't find a job between now and start of class. I know the market is bad, but Pdx's unemployment rate is only 1.5% higher than Chicago's, and I'd rather be underemployed/unemployed/etc. and studying in a place I want to be in during law school rather than be stuck in Chicago, even for another year. While I may live to regret these words later on, I hope you can understand the rationale.

I moved to Portland in 2001 as the tech boom crashed. I worked at Coffee People with 2 BS degrees until I finally got a job at a help desk with a Portland based chain. It was 100% worth it; but then again I had no kids.

John, you are so right. The weather didn't bother me in Portland. However, the moochers did. When I was working @ Coffee People, I didn't care because I wasn't paying taxes. As soon as I got a job & an income, I came to the realization that I was supporting all the lazy pot smokers.

Careful, I bet some one will say we are sullying Oregon's image and it's not as bad as reported....and they will be different because they have youth, enthusiasm, and a can do attitude to get a job in their fondest dream career even if they have no savings or job coming in.

Shhyeah, I wish I could find a way take advantage of all this state sponsored welfare. All I do is pay my taxes don't get much in return besides roads with potholes and no sales tax.
