Thanks, everyone, for all the great advice. I spent last weekend in PDX and loved it! I stayed in downtown and explored that and the Pearl District, went to Hawthorne, and then up to the Alberta Arts District. I loved downtown the most, but Hawthorne was a close second. I navigated the light rail from the airport to the hotel with no problems (which if you knew me, would be shocking!). The bus system was confusing, but you can't complain about such great public transit.
I am planning on visiting in the winter to check out the weather, but it seems like an ideal place for me to start over. Does anybody have opinions on the better schools for employment? I'm certified in both middle and high school English, and I've worked in both and an alternative school. I'm also nationally board certified. I'm also flexible about not teaching and taking another type of job, as long as I could afford my bills. Are there jobs available for people with English degrees?

Unfortunately there aren't many jobs available for anybody right now. Which just means that it takes persistence. Keep posting here; lots of people visit this site and some of them know where to look for teaching jobs.

Here's an idea out of left field: people with English degrees might do well in a publishing company, and one of the most successful publishers around here is Dark Horse Comics . The only job listed on their site right now is in the distribution area, but they might be able to use some freelance copy editing or something. Couldn't hurt to ask.

Hey, thanks for the info! I would definitely consider a career change; I wanted to get into editing as my job originally.
