I am trying to figure out what is the best/cheapest way to get phone service. I don't use the phone much, so I just need something basic. Would prefer mobile, but if there is a very cheap way to get home phone service, it's possible I'd prefer that.

Right now I am leaning towards Cricket, their $30/month plan. Does anyone know of a better (i.e., more cost effective) plan that covers the Portland area?

Thanks in advance for any help.

My brother abandoned his land line and went with Verizon cellular. If you often call other Verizon subscribers it is very economical.

MagicJack requires DSL/Cable Internet. Verizon is launching some kind of internet service that may be very disruptive (aka, change the communication world). I have only heard comments of others.

What is least expensive depends on your specific situation.

Thanks for the info! That's interesting about the Verizon internet service.

I'll look into magicjack but probably will go with a cell, either Verizon or Cricket. Thanks.

Magicjack is mostly a scam, avoid it if you can.

LOL-it isn't a scam. Please explain why you feel that way.
It's a VOIP. How is that a scam?
