My husband and I are thinking about moving to the Portland area, we are from Ca., we just aren't too sure if its the right move for us. My husband has a really good job in the crane industry with great benefits, are there very many crane companies in the Portland area and if so does that kind of work stay busy in the winter months? We can make it without him working for a few months but I just don't know if its the smartest thing to do especially at this time!! He has many qualifications, but will those qualifications even matter at a time like this! We just want to move before the housing market gets worse in Ca. and before our kids get too old.
Any advice??

The best advice always is to have a job lined up first or enough money in saveing to get by until then. Your husband should call Portland area crane companies to find out more about how they pay and finding work in that field.

Great advice!!!

You definitely don't want to move without a job lined up right now.

Your husband's job sounds like one people would kill for in Portland. Even those with experience in the field. I will pass along the advice being given to others; come on vacation and check the town out. If you think you want to move here, try to get a job before you move or move but bring a lot of money on which to live. He may be lucky and be able to find one maybe not but keep enough in reserve to get back home or move elsewhere where the employment situation is better.

Even better, he should talk to his present employer to find out if in the event you have to move back, whether or not they would re-hire him.

Construction work that utilizes a crane has ground to a dead stop. Stay where you are for now.

A good friend is in the crane business. He's been doing it for decades and his commission has come way down and he's in fear of loosing his job due to lack of business.

An outsider will starve in that business.

Come up for job interviews but never make a move until you have a job offer in writing!!
