Hello !

My friend and I are planning to visit Portland for one month. We're looking for a nice appartment (thanks to Craigslist !) but we were wondering how to live like real citizens of the city. We want to make some friends, go out etc.

We'll be there in November... so we already know it will be rainy
Can we take art classes just for one month ? Bowling ? Any idea ?

Do we need a car or a bike is enough ?

Thanks for sharing ! And sorry for my english, we're french by the way
DB

Stay in the main downtown core area. When the weather is too bad for bikes you can use the MAX system. (or a combination of bike and MAX)

You can always rent a car for a few days to explore other areas like Mt. Hood or the Coast.

There is lots to do and it's easy to find things to do or explore once you're here.

There's no need to apologize for your english. It's better then most Americans.

Your English is just fine. Portland has a very good Vistor's Center. It's in the middle of downtown in what is called Pioneer Square. They have many pamphlets and guides that can give you good ideas about places to go and things to do.

November may be too rainy for biking but the weather is as unpredicatable here as anyplace so it may not. You can rent bikes if the weather is clear. There are some nice bowling alleys but I don't know about taking art classes for a month. Classes are usually longer than that. Maybe Craig's List would be helpful there.

Have fun!

Dave's and Minervah's advice is good.

Between now and November, use the Internet to read local newspapers, watch local TV and listen to local radio. Here are some links to get you started:

The daily newspaper: http://www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/

Long-established weekly "alternative" newspaper: http://wweek.com/

New weekly newspaper for younger audience: http://www.portlandmercury.com

New weekly newspaper for older audience: http://portlandtribune.com/news/index.php

"Public" TV and radio (PBS & NPR): http://opb.org/

Local non-profit community radio: http://kboo.fm/

Thank you so much !

As a columnist, I'm glad to see how many newspapers, local radios etc. you have.

Hope we'll get to know some Portlanders, it seems to be a friendly city
