The orange lights commonly found in parking garages and lots are actually broad spectrum high pressure sodium lights that give off a light similar in color to candle flame.

Low pressure sodium lamps provide a monochromatic (a very narrow emission band) and has a very distinct amber color and when you see it, you'll know it. The only place I'm aware of that uses these is the Post Office at NW Hoyt & Broadway.

LPS is the most efficient lighting available at this time, but it has no ability to show color. It still looks cool though.

Anyone know of any other place that uses low pressure sodium?

Look west on Hoyt St from NW Broadway, just by the union station. the lights put out a unique color and you can definitely tell.

That sounds pretty cool. As a photographer, I wonder what kind of color rendition such lights would give in pictures. With such a narrow band of visible frequencies being emitted by the light, it could make for some cool effects.
