Years ago I took the family to NYC, where I worked right after graduation from the UO. One evening we went to a favorite restaurant of mine near Columbia. They ordered pizza even after encoring them to try something else, I their specialty dinner. When they sampled my plate, "Why didn't you tell us!!?"

I haven't found a truly great Italian restaurant in Portland.

I always thought Portland had a lot of very good restaurants. However, after my first trip to NYC which included a visit to Little Italy, it changed my perspective. I returned to Portland on a mission to find an Italian bakery comparable to the ones I had visited in NYC, where I could buy those delicious little Italian cookies and canolli. Ahhhh, the canolli in Little Italy was to die for! I still have not found a close comparison here in the Portland area.

My next door neighbors in Cleveland emigrated from Sicily. Have you have ever had homemade ice cold sauce on pasta on a hot day? It's amazingly good. They taught me how to make the sauce. Cassada (sp?) cake for special occasions. The anise cookies were to die for. We had a great Italian bakery in Cleveland where I bought cheese and the canolis. As I moved to the western part of the U.S., white sauce from Northern Italy seems to be preferred.

Yes, as is the white sauce for clam chowder. I prefer red.
