Relocating to Portland - possibily the N. Portland area - St. John's, Peidmont (my first choice - maybe- ) and/or Boise area.
Two questions - 1. Moderate priced Catholic schools ($400 a month price range or less) with a community feel > BUT keep in mind I am not a Catholic, so would need to lean liberal... and 2. Weather - I have "heard" the the temp is lower/more severe in N.Portland, how is this in relation to Downtown Portlad and/or Portland overall? Signifigant?

Okay I lied, one last, okay two, questions... Out of these neighborhoods (above), which has the best lite rail/ public transit option to Downtown IE: numerous pick-up points/easily accesalble and which of those neighborhoods would be most/more family friendly, yet still have easy access to culture & nightlife?
Thanks so much

Best,

~V

I have a friend who sent her kids to De La Salle. She's a progressive non-Catholic, and has had nothing but good things to say about the school.

CentralCatholicHighSchool

I don't know the cost of Central Catholic. My only connection is I knew one of their teachers and I believe both of his children went there.

Your second question: It depends. In some areas of north Portland it will be colder and windier than downtown. It's closer to the Columbia River and there're some areas with little to no protection (buildings, vegetation, hills). You get some of those Gorge winds which can be downright 'biting cold.'

I wouldn't worry about it too much, unless you're going to be outside all day long. Generally speaking, inner Portland is well-protected from the winds.

Thanks - these were both helpful.
We have a De La Salle in New Orleans too - where I'm from, but currently in Indianapolis.

The two Catholic grade schools in North Portland are De La Salle and Holy Redeemer. De La Salle would seem to be the better fit for what you've described. Not sure of cost. Most Catholic schools in the area will be more than what you suggested, but financial aid is usually available.

My son is now in his mid 30s so the following is not current: He wasn't happy at Lincoln (THE "in" high school) and wanted out. I told him that he needed to tell me where he wanted to go. After much moaning and groaning he said Central Catholic. Mine you, we aren't Catholic so it was a hard sell with the spouse. My son was VERY HAPPY at CC. There was the usual inside game BS between administration and students but it was a great political education.. as well as a good academic program. We don't regret a cent of that tuition.
