Hi. I'm looking for a little info on the alternative (punk/new wave) in the late 80's to early 90's in Portland. I.e.: 1988-1990.

Specifically, I'm looking for a few club names that hosted bands. I'd like both underage clubs and 21 and over clubs.

Thanks.

Default I remember the clubs well...

Top Five Clubs of the 80's and 90's

5) Blue Gallery, NW Portland: Small clean yet somehow wonderfully alive tiny, little club (more like a closet) that saw the likes of Elvis Hitler, Poison Idea, Napalm Beach and many other awesome punk bands. Short lived, around two years, yet kick ass and cool.

4) XRay Cafe, Downtown Burnside: Weird and super freaky. Eclectic crowd of dopers, hippy-freaks and hardcore punks. Saw Jerry-A from Poison Idea break his leg there on a rainy and cold New Year's Eve. Never had a bad time there. Fond memories all around. Saw Hogwild play there many times.

3) Pine Street Theatre, SE Pine: Big and small acts played this large hall. Wood flooring, huge stage and, at one time, the entire ceiling was comprise of every imaginable type of hanging lamp ever devised. There was something like 400 of them hanging down. Had a balcony and a backroom where you could chill and drink beer. Saw Fugazi, Poison Idea, MDC, Suicidal Tendencies, Mortorhead, Bad Brains and many other acts there over a period of ten years. A sadly missed venue.

2) The Long Goodbye, NW Portland: Saw way too many early new wave and punk bands there back in the day. From Dead Kennedy's (they wrote a song about the show) to The Wipers. Saw it...lived it...mourned it's closing only to be opened up in the 90's as some hippy asswipe haunt.

1) The Satyricon, NW Portland: If you don't know why this is number one then **** you. Saw every band that was ever anything there. Spent ten years haunting the place. Unfortunately it's remembered as the place Kurt Cobain met Courtney Love. It's reopened now but, frankly, it can never be the same. Breaks my heart, really.
