The Blazers organization released some renderings and proposals yesterday concerning the redevelopment of Memorial Coliseum and other parts of the Rose Quarter.

Blazers submit proposal for Coliseum

Aside from reducing the capacity of Memorial Coliseum to about 7,000 seats, other ideas include the construction of a new hotel near the convention center, a Nike museum, a farmer's market, and new space for retail, restaurants, and live events.

What do you make of this plan?

I kinda like the idea, the year round farmers market is a good idea. I guess we will see what happens.

I still somewhat new in town....

So I am just asking, is this new Jumptown location the very best location for a year round farmer's market?

From what little I know of Portland, that would surprise me if this Jumptown was even in the top 5 list of places for a year round farmer's market. But as I pointed out "little I know" on this subject.

Phil

Well, it's not a bad location. Portland already has a couple farmer's markets, though. I think the Jumptown proposal includes a farmer's market in order to broaden the appeal of the development to people who aren't necessarily sports fans. That's also why the new retail development is supposed to have an area where local beers are featured and served.

I guess the idea (according to the renderings) is to cover the new development with a glass skycase about six floors up to block out rain.

Those of you old enough to remember the old Oregon Journal Building in the middle of Harbor Drive might know that when it was built in the '30's it was a farmer's market. It was a huge building. There were a lot of open air markets downtown when I was a kid in the '50's & '60's so maybe they were too much competition for the farmers' market to survive. I think one near the Rose Quarter today would probably be a success.
Also back in the late '60's there were big plans for the Rose Quarter area called Coliseum Gardens. Lots of high-rises, retail, etc... in the rendering posted on what was then Union Avenue (MLK). All that came from that was the Calaroga Terrace. Hopefully this time Jumptown will become a reality.

Great. Let the Blazers pay for it since they are the ones that will rake in the dinero.
