It's about 1/2 hour in no rush hour traffic. You should expect 1-1/2 hrs during rush hour. If you can leave at 7:00 on the weekdays, you'll bring your drive time down quite a bit. For example, if I leave Hillsboro at 7:00, I get to Portland at 7:30. If I leave at 7:30, I get there at 8:30.

Thanks! I'll probably be living near Bethany and working nights in Milwaukie. Is the freeway going down there a bad one?

Why do you choose to drive so far?? Why not find a place to live much closer?

We really like the Bethany area (or somewhere around there), and I was originally supposed to have a job nearby. We' might also consider the SE. Coming from LA, we're used to "drive down the street a few blocks" meaning a 20 min drive! We lived in LA for 6 years and can't wait to get out! Is the drive really that bad though at the hours I mentioned? I'm from Vancouver, BC so it'll be nice to get back to a similar environment.

Plan on about 90 minutes each way during rush hour. Some days you'll get lucky and be able to do it in 35-45.

Portland traffic is terrible. We used to have a rush "hour" but now it's rush "hours" which are 6am - 9:30am, 11am - 1:30pm, 3:00pm - 7:00pm AND most weekend days.

Unless you already have a home, you'd be better off arrangeing a home closer to work. Commuting time is pure wasted time w/aggrevation.

Personally, I feel neighborhoods closer to Milwaukee have more character then the suburbia nature of Bethany. (however that's a personal choice)

Nicky, yes agreeing with the estimates here. In ideal conditions with slight speeding it is thirty minutes. In rush hour traffic I could easily see it taking over an hour, even two hours worst case. I like the Bethany area too, but I know there are some wonderful unique neighborhoods in the SE as well - I don't go there as often as I'd like because of....the traffic.

I looked around the SE and liked it as well. It doesn't seem like there are as many newer rentals, or they're older homes that have been renovated, but are more costly. Any specific areas you could think of in the SE that would have affordable rent, but still nice for a young family? I'm aware of Laurelhurst and all those. Not to be snobby, but we do prefer newer/renovated interiors. Thanks!
