I've been here in Portland for just over 3 weeks now and am loving the rain/drizzle and cool temps! Where I came from it's 90+ with 70% humidity, which I am not missing at all! If we have some hot temps later on, I'll deal, but I agree with Minervah, I'll take the mid-70s anytime!

While I love me some sunshine, one of the best lessons I've learned (finally) after nearly 20 years of living out here, is to not let the weather dictate what I'm going to do or how I'm going to feel about the day. We are fortunate enough here to have plenty of dry days with clouds, or barely drizzly days with clouds, so we can still get out there and have the fun we want to have. Yeah, it's crummy not to be guaranteed 80 degrees and sunshine on 4th of July, but at least we don't have 95% humidity, or thunderstorms every summer afternoon, or tornadoes, or 110 degree heat. Any of these would also make 4th of July less than awesome. The only place I've been to that has what I'd describe as perfect weather year round is maybe southern California. And I don't care how perfect the weather is there, it's not good enough to offset all the other problems.

Central California can get real doozies, too, and they "last" a lot longer than the ones here. I don't miss them, though. I like the light shows but don't like the thunder.

Are you sure that heat wave wasn't just some sort of sales gimmick for the home air conditioning installers businesses? You know, hot one summer, the three or four normal summers, then another heat wave to drum up the repair business?

It was quire real. and cost my brothers painting company about $10.000
in lost revenue. I'm a native, and this is one of the worst heat spells I can remember in 50 years.

I like the occasional thunderstorm, but am happy not to have thunderstorms every day. A few years ago I spent two weeks in Atlanta, New Orleans, and Pensacola and it rained every single day for several hours in each of those places. I spent 4th of July in New Orleans getting pelted by rain, and smelled not a single hot dog barbecuing nor heard any fireworks. Most boring 4th of July ever!

3 weeks...HA! This has been going on since November with very little relief. Let me know if you still feel the same way after next winter.

I wrote this letter to Oregon today after looking at the 7 day forecast:

Quote:
Dear Oregon,

I appreciate you watering the plants in our garden for free with rain, mizzle, drizzle, mist, downpours, showers, light rain, heavy rain, cats & dogs, and liquid sunshine. However, do keep in mind that:

One month is joyous. The second month is stupendous. At three months, it's enjoyable. When reaching four months it is still superb. At the fifth month it becomes routine. Six months of this is definitely tolerable and acceptable. By the time we reach seven months, it's bearable, barely, and not out of the realm of reason. Going on eight months is when it begins to be a bit ridiculous. Any longer than that and I'm buying a plane ticket to California!!

I trust you comprehend the severity of this threat, and I really do not want to have to resort to taking such drastic measures, but you may leave me no other option. Please take this into careful consideration.

Sincerely, your loving resident and concerned citizen,
T.

LOL, indeed! The Tampa Bay area, from whence I've just come, is the lightning capital of the western hemisphere, with violent, dangerous, power-interrupting thunderstorms almost every afternoon in summer (and fall). I did hear two anemic claps of thunder here in Portland the other day, and had to laugh out loud. But I certainly don't miss them; it's nice not to have my internet service interrupted, thus interrupting my work, each day.

And, RoseCity, I will indeed report back this time next year regarding whether the rainy weather has gotten to me or not, but I'm thinking not. We'll see!
