My wife and I are expecting our first baby boy very soon, and we have a first name in mind but not totally sure about the spelling, I want to name him "Lewis", but my wife likes "Louis" instead even though they can be pronounced the same way. Our last name starts with "S" and ends with "A".
Also, we want him to have a middle name, and here are the suggestions:
1) Ethan
2) Jacob
3) Abel
4) Kane
5) Cain
What do you think about the first name spelling, and how about the middle name?
Lewis would be easier for more people to pronounce, imo, because some people may pronounce Louis in the French way. As for the middle name, I prefer Ethan and Jacob out of the choices listed. Personally, I dislike the name Abel, and Kane/Cain has a negative connotation to me.

I agree, we actually are thinking about Ethan as a middle name, and I also agree with you about the spelling of Lewis.
Between Louis and Lewis, I prefer the former spelling.
I know more people with the surname where it is spelled the latter way, and I've never been crazy about surnames as first names, myself.
I know that Louis is also a surname (as in Joe Louis...though, actually, Louis was his middle name, he just dropped his surname professionally), I just happen to know more people with Lewis as a last name, so I associate it more.
We avoided Jacob in all contexts, because it's just so common right now. We like traditional names, but not necessarily ones that have occupied top spots in baby name lists for so many years.
I like Lewis better. Louis is too French and no one likes the French. Besides Louis will become Louie. That is a bowling name or the name of a gorilla.
Ethan is the least "I took this name form the Bible" name. Nothing wrong with using bible names really, but it gives the name a different motive than creating a unique persona for your child. Sort of controlling. As to Cain and Able, I would never use Cain why name your child a murderer? I would also avoid Kane because then he will be called "Kahn yeah" after that raving idiot pop singer. I would not name my kid any name typically associated with a murder or an idiot. Jacob is a fine name. Personally I always assume anyone named Jacob is Jewish. Probably not a justified assumption, but it is one I always make That does not hurt anything, but I think I am not alone and that assumption may be made often. So, if it bothers you that people may assume he is Jewish, you may want to look into this and see how common it is.
