Has anyone had their Dr.do this? How far along were you, and did it help you to go into labor? Right now I am 38 weeks and three days with my third child. At my next appt. my Dr. said she would do this. I never had it done before. Is it uncomfortable, or are there any unpleasant side effects?

My mama always used to say that babies know when they need to be born. No sense trying to rush them. I'm guessing your obstetrician is planning a Caribbean cruise or something? Best to wait until the bun is done before trying to get it out of the oven. IYKWIM.

The residents used to do this to get labor moving in patients who were taking more time than they deemed strictly necessary (large teaching hospital, which explains many things). It's uncomfortable, certainly, but not like "screaming in pain" hurts. More like a really aggressive and prolonged vaginal exam.
If you're not due for two more weeks and don't have any pressing medical issues requiring you to deliver prior to dates I can't imagine why it would be advisable. Impatience (on the doctor's part or anyone else's) shouldn't be a valid medical reason.

Stimulation of oxytocin production will get things moving far less aggressively. If wild monkey sex is out of the question, nipple stimulation will often do the job. (Hey, it's what the midwives recommended, don't blame me for the visual.)

I was induced with all 3 of mine...one because I was overdue, one because I had low amniotic fluid, and one because, well, I don't really know...

It's not painful at all. I was in labor, at about 4 cm each time, so it helped speed along my labor and intensify my contractions. I thought it no big deal, except when my husband pointed out that the device they use to "break the bag of water" looks like a knitting needle. Ouchers! No pain...and anyway, isn't all the pain worth it in the end?

Well, they have already moved my DD up by two weeks because they said the baby was measuring bigger. So that could be part of the reason. My first two came all on their own.First one was late, which is normal, second one came right on his DD! I have tried everything-nipple stimulation, spicy food, walking..I know I still have time but nothing has happened lol. At my appt.today my Dr. said I was 2 cm and 30% effaced. So hopefully if I keep walking I'll be dilated a lil more by my next appt.

Have sex! My OB said that with mine...didn't work, but it came from the horse's mouth.

Being induced is no big deal other than you're tethered to the bed for the most part because of the pitocin and such. After the water breaks, the labor usually speeds up. With my son, I had my water "broken" at 6:30; I was at 4 cm. He was born at 8:30...2 hours later I was in full labor. It's no big deal other than the contractions get stronger, but that's the point.

No worries...babies know when to come and sometimes the docs help speed the process along. Funny, though, I forgot all the pain and discomfort the MOMENT those little babies were born!

Good luck!

My dr. wanted to do the same thing with last one. I was 38 weeks and she couldn't believe I had made it that far. Baby #5. And I'm an older Mom. She was positive it would make me go into labor. The next week, my hubby took off work, I took my bag and "stuff" and told everybody we were having the baby that day. At my appt. still 2cm and 30% effaced. She stripped my membranes---and it did hurt. Imagine someone putting their finger in your cervix and making a big O shape. She told us it could be 10 minutes to a couple of hours. So we went and had lunch.

And waited.

And waited.

Nothing.

At my next appointment she wanted to schedule to induce me and I declined.

My little came 1 day before my due date.

Good luck on your decision and best wishes for you and family.

I went to 41 weeks with both of my babies and had my membranes stripped both times. I went into labor within hours and had two fat babies - all good.

It does hurt, I won't lie. It doesn't hurt as bad as labor by any means, but it is uncomfortable like poking a bruise or something. It worked for me though, so it was definitely worth it.

That said, I don't think it would completely kick-start labor if you really aren't showing enough natural signs.
