I didn't take a birthing class, but I had a pretty good idea of what was supposed to happen. I also didn't have a specific birthing plan. My doc discussed with me what happens under normal circumstances, and I said "sounds like a plan".
If you do choose to have a birthing plan, just try not to get discouraged if things can't happen according to plan. I've seen a more than a few mothers get so attached to the plan that they feel upset when things don't go exactly that way so that it ends up adding to the stress. As long as the baby is born and you are both healthy, then it was a good birth.

This is a really good thing to remember. I just had a mommy friend in hysterics as her birthing plan could not be used due to an emergency c-section.
I don't have one for #3 & never did for the other two. I had an "idea" & flexible plans in place.
We all want a controlled, healthy & peaceful environment during l/d. But nothing is 100% guaranteed in the process.
Of course there are no guarantees. Having a birthing plan just makes it easier to communicate your choices. Write it down and pass it out. Not demands, just preferences. That can be hard to do when you're in active labor!

Seriously unless the child or mom are at jeopardy, all the planning in the world will be moot on the day of delivery. Some of the most hysterical moments happen that years down the road become the...ya just can't make this up!!
