How cold will it be at night the first weekend of April? Too cold to camp?

I am hoping it's at least 40-45 at night that time of year?

Here are the averages for the year.

Average Weather for Prescott, AZ - Temperature and Precipitation

These are averages of course. You must also remember that this is the city of Prescott and many areas you will be camping in the forest are a little higher.
And we could get snow this time of the year too although looking at hour history there are only 2 events that totals 1 and 1.5" in the last 10 years but in '87-88 there was a 4.5" snowfall in April.
You just never know.
Old timers in the area say that they remember snow on the ground in June at the courthouse in town in the 50s.
But you could get that 45° number overnight depending on when you camp. The later part of the month would be better but then again at the same time our overnight low last night was 40° according to my WX station.
That said if you look at our WX we are expecting a 70% chance of rain snow on Monday with a 43° high and a low of 28°.
Camping in April can be iffy.

I agree. In April, it can be very nice and then turn very cold/snowy. For example, April 2010 had 17 days where the low was 35F or colder. It snowed on April 22 and on April 30 the low was 28F.

As you can see, there is a great likelihood that you will see 35F or colder temps in April.

I am an optimist so I say go for it, yeah you may run into some weather but more than likely it will be really nice. It has been getting into the mid 60's already and it's usually sunny so that's camping weather to me.

I can remember going out in the RV with the kids in April in CA to the Sierra Nevadas.
It snowed so hard we could not get out of where we were and I had to call into work for a few days. It was 2-3 days before I was willing to hit the road with a little less snow.
But we had lots of food and propane and so what?

Just because it gets cold doesn't mean you can't enjoy camping. Pack for cold weather and stay bundled up and warm at night. The days will be beautiful.

According to NOAA, the average for the last freeze day in Prescott is May 15th but they have experienced frosts all the way until June 17th.

To answer your question, yes, it will get below 40F in April when you camp at night. There is a 90% chance it will get below freezing at night for the first week of April. They had a low of 15F on April 02, 1975.

Just bring enough clothes for below freezing temps. If you don't want to deal with the cold, and only want 40F+ nighttime temps, you will have to wait until June to go camping.

I've camped in subfreezing temps before, it's not a big deal if you are properly prepared. In fact, it's often nicer to do so in areas where you can get snakes and poisonous insects (spiders, scorpions, centipedes) in warmer weather.

The day warms up well but it gets cold at night, as noted previously. Be sensible and well-supplied with cold weather items and you can have a great time. Watch the weather reports for precipitation, probably don't want to get stuck in snow and ice. Contact the regional parks and recreation departments for information on what campgrounds will be open for offseason camping.

I agree, back in the days when the family was tenting it cold WX just gave you a good excuse for a good fire.
I would rather have cold WX, without the wind of course, than rain. Some of our worst trips were because of rain that just would not let up.
Not fun in a tent.
