Hi, I haven't seen much here about the quality of the drinking water in the Prescott/Prescott Valley or Mayer area. Can someone fill me in on how the drinking water is there?

Thanks

AZ is hard water. For drinking water buy Crystal Geyser in gallons from your favorite store. Family Dollar and Safeway are two that carry it. It is bottled from springs in AR. At the very least if you drink the local AZ water you will get kidney stones and calcium build up in your body. Crystal doesn`t use the cheap plastic bottles that leech the plastic into the water like the cheaper water at the big box store. If you have your own well make sure and get it tested. If you live in an area with septic systems when it rains it can contaminate the well. There is natural arsenic and uranium in some areas besides the residual from mines. Test first before buying a property if you are concerned.

Their is no one answer, as all wells are not the same. Testing is the only answer.

The water from the city systems is perfectly fine. The city water is tested for all kinds of contaminants. Regarding hard water, I'd say we're middle of the road. Very few homes have water softeners - probably less than 5%. As for wells, it depends where you are. As others have noted, you should have the well tested.

Water is not very expensive, but the bill doubles when you include the sewer. Our water bill in the Prescott Country Club is about $15-$20/month, but we do not use the Prescott Valley sewer. With sewer, bills are around $40/month. We also do not use a lot of water - about 3,000 gallons per month. If you have a lawn, take long showers, and use water extensively, your bill will be higher. We have a friend who has a lot of grass and she pays about $100-$150 per month in the summer.

Water rates can vary, depending on which water company supplies you. Some private water companies in some developments are really expensive. I don't remember the numbers, but a friend in one of those developments on the north side of 69 between Prescott and PV really gets ripped.

So factor in accurate water rates before buying or even renting. There can be a huge difference.

You're probably talking about Diamond Valley. That is a private water company.

Yup. That's it.

Any idea how many other areas are like that?

There are several. They tend to be in the unincorporated areas that do not have access to city water. Most of the private companies are pretty good. I think the Diamond Valley company is the exception, not the rule. Many of the subdivisions in Williamson Valley have private water companies. White Horse Ranch near Dewey has a private company. Creekside of Prescott, on the other side of Hwy 69 from Diamond Valley has private water, and that company is good.
