According to this thread no, and I think there was another thread out there recently that said no as well.

Vehicle emission test

A month late, but here are some emissions testing maps.

ADEQ: eMaps

I believe that you are supposed to go through emissions testing if you even commute to or go to school in a covered area.

Nothing is forever, though. You could easily see a whole county scrabbling for air pumps for late 1960's Chevrolets.

I think in cars below about 1976 in the Phoenix or Tucson areas, the smog people DON'T check for any kind of under the hood smog controls. I'm in Bullhead City looking at Needles; and Cali does NOT check anything under 1976.

As I alluded to, these things have a tendency to change. Old car people have a pretty negligible amount of political horsepower, so to speak.

In California (Cali?), the 1975 and prior rule is close to being overturned now and again. Heck, it used to be a 30 year sliding window until that got changed. In addition, the key notion is that they don't *check*, not that you aren't supposed to have a fully constructed smog system (plus some add-ons in a few cases). I don't know how they deal with smog controlled older cars in the random pull-overs that happen in some California cities, it could be ugly.

A lot of American muscle cars used to really struggle with this stuff before the 1975 and earlier rule popped into place. They found it impossible to pass hydrocarbon numbers at idle, 'clean piping' used to be rife. No doubt there were insane situations where a 1965 Shelby Mustang was ignored and a 1966 was held to a standard.

I digress. It would be nice to have a definitive answer on whether pre 1976 cars need to pass visual inspection in Phoenix or Tucson if anyone has that information.

The younger people refer to California as "Cali" a slur that drives me a little nuts. It is like a kids game that they are too lazy to pronounce the word so they have to nickname it. California here we come right back where we started from, so on, so forth, a song that was song quite often in the 60's. Geez, people are you getting so lazy you have to nickname the word California?

Thank you, smilinpretty.
It drives this California native very nuts.

My 1963 Dodge Dart passed Califoria's smog inspection. I didn't have to have it done but I had a mechanic friend check my car for fun. Sometimes the old cars do just fine.
