Just wondering if anyone with experience here can state observable differences between these places as they pertain to general livibility. I'm also concerned about crime rates, but besides that, I'd appreciate any opinions.

Depends on what you are looking for. If you are looking for more amenities (shopping variety, restaurants, more specialized medical care, etc.), Prescott wins hands down over the others. If you are looking for a more rural, small town atmosphere, then Cottonwood or Payson, or Camp Verde, more or less in that order. Verde Valley is a region, not a town in itself. It includes Camp Verde and Cottonwood, and smaller towns like Cornville and Clarkdale and Lake Montezuma Some sources include Jerome and Sedona in the Verde Valley, I don't think of either of them in that context; when you ask about Verde Valley, what s[ecific area are you asking about?

Hi.

Here is a resource on crime in various cities in AZ. The Most Dangerous (and Safest) Cities in Arizona

Keep in mind there is a weather difference as well. The Verde Valley is warmer. Less snow and less cold in the winter, but more days over 100 in the summer.

Observer 53's comments regarding amenities and rural/urban feel are correct.

Prescott to prescott valley is just kind of nicer overall. Way more amenities. Cottonwood is a different breed of people overall generally. Walmart is like the only store there.

Thanks for your replies so far.

My mistake, I meant to add Clarkdale in the mix rather than Verde Valley.

Ideally, my wife and I would like a small property that allows livestock. We would like to be able to make day trips to Phoenix if need be and we generally want less crime than most places in New Mexico, where we currently reside.

The acreage homes in Coyote Springs just east of Pronghorn allows livestock. That's north of highway 89A and Robert Rd, check those out also.

When we were looking for a place to settle years ago we went to several towns and spent several days there in each.
I like the idea of Payson but the Hospital ER was not much for people that need care.
The town is surrounded by national forest which raises the prices to buy too. IT also seemed like a long drive to anywhere.

Agree with Ken. Payson would have been our first choice but after doing the research we had to down grade it for now due to infrastructure, amenities and Hospital System. No place is ever going to check off all of the boxes but Prescott is pretty close. Its a tough balance to find all of the things that you are looking for and still have that small town appeal Payson is close maybe someday.

I was in Payson a couple years ago, didn't seem like it had much going for it. But I have a potential job there, is there much to do? Im a younger single guy, doesn't seem like Payson will do much for me.
