I remember the time the Redskins lost to the college all stars too
But I remember some probowl games where the players put forth the effort to win.
Back in the 70's and early 80's for example. Put Dallas Cowboys Randy White on a field and try telling him to play nice and tone it down....yeah right. He's going to take out anyone who runs past him. And Klecko would not want to miss a probowl sack of Montana, And Jack Tatum in the back field? Accident waiting to happen
Some players even would refuse to play in the probowl because they did not want to risk injury.
This year, Terrell SUggs was sure smiling and having fun out there, and he was trying NOT To hurt anyone ! COuld have been a flag football game for all the contact.
Considering how physical all football games are, there is always potential for an ACL or MCL injury which could take a player out for 1 year. The injuries could also be worse and wind up being career or life threatening. The other thing is that the players from the super bowl teams never play. So why not just name an all star team and leave it at just that...an ACKNOWLEDGEMENT.
What they should do is get rid of the pro bowl and replace it with a preseason exhibition game featuring the best 1st, 2nd and possibly 3rd year players in the NFL going against the top college players drafted that year. This would generate enough interest, watching young players possibly competing for roster spots and showcasing their talents. It will also be a great way to begin the season. Of course playing in the game would be optional.

Would you want your best players playing in a preseason game with the chance of potential injury in a game that doesn't even matter in the standings?

Like I said it would be optional. There would be a surplus of players who would want to play. The 3 year QB number one bust. A free agent seeking a job or a bigger contract, a college standout who wasnt drafted etc.

Why would a meaningless game like that generate any more interest than the pro bowl and why would teams release their young players for a game like that.

Because players would be playing at 100% to win jobs or make a team. Teams would release their young players if their on the "bubble" due to a good draft and/or a free agent signing. Releasing a young player under these circumstances seems alot smarter than allowing your 10 year two time superbowl mvp to play in a game like that.

Think of what the pro bowl is all about. Why would an UN-DRAFTED college standout qualify for the Pro Bowl? The pro bowl is supposed to be for the best players. If anyone can play, then it loses all value. It would have to be the Pro-Am bowl.
