I agree that Barry Sanders is the best ever. If he wouldn't have retired he would have obliterated the yardage record. Smith is nowhere near in his league.
It is so hard to compare players from different eras. The game changes so much. When Jim Brown played you couldn't even block with your hands. You had to block with your shoulders and upper body. And that was against run oriented defenses. Put him behind a good line in a spread out offense today and who knows how much better he would have been (if that is even possible). I would put LT in the top ten for sure.
Barry Sanders was definitely one of the most nimble backs ever to play the game. The things he could do with his feet and legs were incredible. Adrian Peterson is probably the closest thing to Barry Sanders since Barry Sanders, but it's really not even that close.
Another guy who doesn't get as much cred as he should is Terrell Davis. Had he stayed healthy, what could he have done?
Granted the numbers would've been muted considerably because Denver's running game has been weak sauce for most of the last decade, but if he'd lasted 4-5 more seasons he'd probably be a HOF lock.
I remember a game against tampa bay where he just lost yardage. Then second down he was gone 80 yard run.. I think he had 3 long run in that game. Also remember the highlight the nfl use to use for Monday night football where he was breaking someone ankle.. He was the best..... I use to watch football all the time but I don,t as excited any more because I have not seen a back like Barry since. Peterson is bigger but he might as fast as him. Cause he can go. But peterson does not seem as good as before....his injury
Definitely Barry!!! I've said it many times before. He was like the Dan Marino of his team. Marino's teams were all passing and no running game while Barry had the shoulder the load because of inferior QB's. Unlike people like Emmitt Smith that had it much easier because he had a good QB with solid receivers, so defenses couldn't just protect against the run. I do think he retired way too early but in my book he is #1 hands down. Now LT was a good back and he has great initials but he is nowhere near the caliber of Barry. Okay, now the OP has to stop using my lines. I have been the one praising Barry on here for years.
